Introduction

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Subharti Dental College & Hospital, organized a two-day national surgical workshop titled “Exploring the Spectrum of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with Pioneers” under the aegis of the Indian Academy of Maxillofacial Surgery (IAMS). The event aimed to foster academic exchange, clinical insight, and practical exposure among postgraduate students, young maxillofacial surgeons, and dental professionals from across the country.

Objectives of the Workshop

  1. To enhance clinical understanding of maxillofacial surgical procedures through live surgical interactions.
  2. To provide a platform for academic deliberation and case-based discussions with stalwarts of the field.
  3. To encourage scientific presentations and participation among undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Scientific Programme

The scientific sessions were designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience combining lectures, table discussions, and live surgical demonstrations.

Day 1 (26th September 2025):

  1. Inauguration ceremony
  2.  Live Surgery discussions in the operation theatre, enabling real-time learning and observation of intricate maxillofacial procedures. The case operated was that of bilateral distractor removal and advancement genioplasty.
  3. E-Poster Presentations: Undergraduate participants showcased research and clinical case presentations on diverse maxillofacial themes.
  4. Keynote lecture

Day 2 (27th September 2025)

  1. E-Poster Presentations by postgraduates  on diverse maxillofacial themes.
  2. Lectures by Eminent Faculty: Covering a broad range of topics including Post-Traumatic Residual Deformities, Surgical Anatomy of Orbit, Complications of Orbital Trauma, Ameloblastoma Variants, Mandibular Osteotomies, and Facial Aesthetics.
  3. Table Discussion Sessions: Undergraduate and postgraduate participants took part in this session where the postgraduate students were encouraged to dicuss th various case scenarios starting from the presenation to treatment planning. This session was led by faculty experts, promoting interactive and in-depth academic exchange.
  4. Valedictory Session: The day concluded with an appreciation of presenters and interactive feedback from delegates.

Participation

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from across India, with over 134 undergraduate students and 17 postgraduate delegates in attendance. The event brought together a vibrant mix of learners and experienced faculty, fostering mentorship and collaboration.

Outcomes and Feedback
The workshop successfully achieved its objectives by offering a balanced blend of theoretical and clinical exposure. Participants expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to interact directly with national stalwarts and gain first-hand insights into surgical decision-making and execution.
The sessions encouraged evidence-based practice, critical thinking, and peer learning, significantly enriching the academic environment of the department.

Conclusion
The workshop “Exploring the Spectrum of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with Pioneers” was a resounding success. It reinforced the institution’s commitment to fostering continuous learning, surgical skill enhancement, and research in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery through collaboration with other organisations and academies for enhanced exposure and learning opportunities.

PUBLIC AWARENESS LECTURE SERIES (PALS)

Dental Check-up and Treatment Camp

Date: 3rd February 2025
Venue: Sanota Village, Daurala Block, Meerut
Organized by: Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in collaboration with Department of Public Health Dentistry, SDC&H
Introduction
As part of the Public Awareness Lecture Series (PALS), a dental check-up and treatment camp was successfully conducted at Sanota Village, Daurala Block, Meerut, on 3rd February 2025, this initiative aimed to provide essential dental care and treatment to the local community while raising awareness about oral health and hygiene.


Camp Highlights

Free Dental Check-up: A total of 66 patients were screened and provided with necessary dental consultations.
Treatment Services: Basic dental treatments were provided to patients requiring immediate care.
Oral Health Education: Patients were educated about the importance of oral hygiene, preventive dental care, and common dental issues.
Conclusion
The camp successfully provided much-needed dental care to the rural community, ensuring access to essential oral health services. The combined efforts of both departments played a crucial role in spreading awareness and improving oral healthcare among the underserved population.

 

Dental Check-up and Oral Cancer Awareness Campaign

Organized by: Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in collaboration with Department of Public Health Dentistry, SDC&H
Introduction
Continuing the efforts under the Public Awareness Lecture Series (PALS), a dental check-up and oral cancer awareness campaign was conducted at Nutech Industries, Partapur, Meerut, on 21st February 2025. This camp aimed to provide free dental screening and educate individuals about the risks, early detection, and prevention of oral cancer.


Camp Highlights

Free Dental Screening: 80 patients underwent oral health examinations.
Oral Cancer Awareness: Patients were educated on the risk factors, early signs, and preventive measures for oral cancer.
Free Medications: Essential medications were provided to patients requiring treatment.
Conclusion
The camp successfully created awareness about oral cancer and provided vital dental care to the attendees. By offering free check-ups, screenings, and medications, the initiative contributed significantly to the well-being of the community. The collaboration between the departments ensured a well-organized and impactful outreach program.

 

World Oral Health Day Celebration, 2025

On 7th April 2025, a sensitization session on “Oral Cancer: Self-Examination And Prevention” for non-teaching staff was conducted by Dr Sameer Pandey, Associate professor.
The lecture focussed upon the awareness about the common use of tobacco products and their debilitating effects and other causes of oral cancer. Spreading awareness about self-examination of small lesions which may be treated at early stage if detected timely.

 

 

SUBHARTI ALUMNI LECTURE SERIES (SALS)

Report: The lecture was delivered by Dr Kiran Patel, a distinguished alumnus and expert in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The primary objective of this lecture was to provide practical guidelines and share expert tips and tricks for the beginners in the use of bicortical screw implants. The lecture included interactive session with Q & A segment, various case studies and doubt clarification sessions.

Pre-conference course in collaboration with Cynodent

Topic: Sinus Lift and Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR)
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Subharti Dental College & Hospital, in association with Cynodent, organized a highly informative Pre-Conference Course on Sinus Lift and Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) on the 7th of March, 2024. This event was held as a precursor to an upcoming dental conference, attracting students, faculty, and practitioners eager to enhance their surgical skills and understanding of advanced implantology techniques.

Speaker:
The session was led by the distinguished Dr. Jasneet Singh Kalra, a renowned prosthodontist and implantologist. With his extensive experience, Dr. Kalra provided invaluable insights into the latest techniques and advancements in sinus lift procedures and GBR.

Course  Highlights:
The course covered essential topics related to sinus augmentation and guided bone regeneration, which are critical for implant placement in areas of deficient bone volume. Key highlights included:

  • Sinus Lift Techniques: Dr. Kalra elaborated on both direct and indirect sinus lift methods, focusing on their indications, contraindications, and the step-by-step approach to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR): The speaker emphasized the role of GBR in enhancing bone volume and discussed various grafting materials, membranes, and fixation techniques used to optimize implant placement.
  • Hands-on Training: Participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on training, practicing the procedures on models under the expert guidance of Dr. Kalra. This practical session allowed attendees to refine their skills and clarify any doubts.
  • Complication Management: A significant portion of the course was dedicated to managing complications that may arise during sinus lifts or GBR, such as membrane perforation or graft failure, with tips on prevention and effective resolution strategies.

The course was a resounding success, providing participants with a deeper understanding of advanced surgical techniques and the confidence to incorporate these procedures into their practice. Pre-Conference Course: Facial Aesthetics

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Subharti Dental College & Hospital organized an enlightening Pre-Conference Course on Facial Aesthetics on the 7th of March, 2024. This course attracted enthusiastic participants from various fields of dentistry and surgery, all eager to explore the evolving science and art of enhancing facial beauty and symmetry.
Speaker:
The course was led by Dr. Athreya Rajagopal, an esteemed expert in facial aesthetics and reconstructive surgery. With his vast experience and knowledge in aesthetic procedures, Dr. Rajagopal offered a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of facial aesthetics, catering to both beginners and advanced practitioners.
Course Highlights:
The course covered various facets of facial aesthetics, focusing on contemporary techniques and non-invasive procedures that are gaining popularity. Key topics discussed included:

  • Understanding Facial Proportions and Symmetry: Dr. Rajagopal began by emphasizing the importance of analyzing facial proportions and understanding how symmetry influences aesthetic appeal. He provided practical tools for assessing facial structures.
  • Non-Surgical Aesthetic Procedures: The course focused on non-invasive techniques such as Botox and dermal fillers, which have become widely used for facial rejuvenation. Dr. Rajagopal demonstrated the use of these materials, explaining the anatomy, techniques, and safety protocols associated with each.
  • Surgical Approaches in Facial Aesthetics: Advanced procedures like rhinoplasty, facial implants, and chin augmentation were also covered, with insights into patient selection, surgical planning, and outcomes.
  • Live Demonstrations and Hands-On Training: The course featured live demonstrations, where participants observed Dr. Rajagopal performing aesthetic enhancements on models. This was followed by hands-on training, allowing attendees to practice under expert supervision, gaining confidence in performing aesthetic procedures.

 VALUE ADDED COURSE- BLS CPR/AED

The BLS CPR/AED certification program was highly beneficial, providing participants with critical skills necessary for emergency response. The collaboration between the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Anesthesiology & Critical Care ensured a comprehensive and professional learning experience. The successful completion of this program reaffirms Subharti Dental College & Hospital’s commitment to promoting healthcare excellence and emergency preparedness.

PUBLIC AWARENESS LECTURE SERIES (PALS)

As part of the month-long trauma awareness programme, the department organized various camps around rural Meerut, where public awareness lecture series on road safety were held in the month of February. The major goal was to reach out to rural communities and teach them about the necessity of traffic laws and regulations. The presentation also emphasised the aftermath of accidents and the hardships one must confront.

The Department also observed International Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Day on February 13. There were a number of events held in the college premises to raise public awareness on road traffic accidents. The function began with a discourse on road safety by Lt.Gen. Dr. N.K Sahoo, professor and HOD. He highlighted his concern over the growing number of road traffic accidents among the country's youth. He emphasised the need of raising awareness about road safety in order to promote sustainable transport systems and create safer road environments.

The postgraduate and undergraduate students presented a MIME display with the topic "Safe Roads for All". The MIME featured several traffic norms, rules and regulations, as well as the necessity of being a good Samaritan. The presentation also included a quiz session for the general public on the theme of road safety, with right answers awarded.

The Honourable Vice Chancellor of SVSU delivered a thought-provoking speech on the significance of adhering to traffic laws and raising awareness about the same among the general public. He also stressed the need of contacting the proper specialist for optimal treatment and a better outcome, and expressed worry about the specialty's limited reach to society.

BLS/CPR-AED (Value Added course)

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has organized a value-added BLS/CPR and AED training for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The training was provided by International Trauma Care, Hyderabad. The four-day training ran from January 29 to January 2, 2024, and was held in the dental college campus. The training attracted over 140 participants, including those from outside. The training included the foundations of life support procedures, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillators (AED), and basic airway management. This training acts as a pre-requisite for other advanced life support courses, ensuring that healthcare providers are prepared to manage crises.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery SDC, celebrated World Oral Health Day on 20rd March 2023 with the aim to promote oral health awareness among patients. The day was marked with various activities that focused on educating patients about maintaining oral hygiene, informing about post extraction instructions, creating awareness about oral cancer and black fungus.
Activities:

  • We emphasized the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and the need to detect oral cancer and black fungus early. Faculty members along with post graduate students and interns explained on the causes, symptoms, and prevention of oral cancer and black fungus.
  • Every patient treated in department was given a printed format of post extraction instructions.
  • Towards the end, question answer session was conducted where patients were encouraged to ask questions and clear their doubts.

 

Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in association with International Trauma Care, Hyderabad Roberts cpr conducted a value added course on basic life support from 30th January 2023 to 3rd of February 2023. This course was attended by more than 200 candidates that included post graduate students, interns and all the faculty members of the college. Program included series of lectures, demonstration on mannequins and then hands on by each candidate. In the end a MCQ based questions exam was mandatory to pass in order to receive certification which is valid for all over India for a period of two years.

 

YEAR 2022


CDE cum Hands-On program “Implants and Prosthetic considerations”
Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Department of Prosthodontics and crown and bridge conducted a joint CDE cum Hands-On program“Implants and Prosthetic considerations' ' on 28th and 29th of November 2022. The Guest speakers of the event were Colonel (Dr)V. S. Legha(Professor and Head Department of Prosthodontics crown and bridge, Army Dental college, New Delhi) and Dr. Reshu Madan (Professor and Head Department of Prosthodontics, crown and bridge, SGT university, Gurgaon). The lecture was attended by BDS final year students, interns of all departments and postgraduate students. The hands-on course was available for interns and post graduate students and it allowed the participants to work on mandible models and place implant themselves. The event was attended by almost 50 delegates.


ORTHO- SURGE 2022 – A workshop On Orthognathic Surgery

Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics conducted a joint CDE cum Hands-On program  “ORTHO- SURGE 2022 – A workshop On Orthognathic Surgery”  on 14th and 15th of April 2022. The Chief Guest of the event was Lt. Gen. N.K. Sahoo PVSM, VSM, PHDS, DGDS & Colonel Commandant Army Dental Corps. The event was graced by a number of eminent Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Orthodontists, who not only shared their knowledge by showcasing their cases and experience but imparted practical knowledge about surgeries and case planning also by conducting a hands on course. The hands on course allowed the participants to work on state of the art Dolphin 3d software and the practice of the ostetomy  cuts on skull models. The eminent speakers besides the chief guest who himself is a renowned Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon included Brig. Blakrishnayan Jayan (Commandant Army Dental Centre R&R), Dr. O.P. Kharbanda (Dr. C.G. Pandit  National Chair of ICMR), Dr. Sanjeev Kumar (Professor & Head Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery SGT Dental College, Gurugram), Dr. S.P. Singh (Professor & Head Unit of Orthodontics OHSC, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Dr. Raj Kumar Verma (Associate Professor) Unit of Orthodontics OHSC, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Dr. Sanjeev Verma (Associate Professor) Unit of Orthodontics OHSC, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Dr. Vinay Kumar (Associate Professor) Unit of Orthodontics OHSC, PGIMER, Chandigarh. The event was attended by almost 150 delegates.

International Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Day

In celebration of International Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Day held on February 13th each year, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Subharti Dental College & Hospital, Meerut in commitment to spreading awareness and educating the lesser-educated people of villages so as to prevent and promote early treatment of diseases of the Head & Neck region, including the oral cavity conducted dental education & awareness camps at Village Sadharanpur and Village Moradabad Meerut, UP and distributed free medicines at Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery dental OPD. LECTURE #16 IN THE WEBINAR SERIES COMMEMORATING 25 YEARS OF SUBHARTI DENTAL COLLEGE & HOSPITAL
The department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery hosted an informative and encompassing lecture elaborating biological principles of cell signaling and stem cell properties and its application in the field of craniofacial, reconstructive and esthetic surgery by Professor Dr. S.M. Balaji, Chennai across e-learning platforms which were live on various platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. The talk attended live by over 200 participants including faculty, students and alumni was conducted on 26th November, 2021 and is still available for future viewing.

LECTURE #15 IN THE WEBINAR SERIES COMMEMORATING 25 YEARS OF SUBHARTI DENTAL COLLEGE & HOSPITAL
In the spirit of incorporating the e-learning platform for continuing medical education as part of the legacy of knowledge sharing and spreading of Subharti Dental College & Hospital for past 25 years, the department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery conducted a webinar on “Oral Submucous Fibrosis – An Interprofessional Approach in Early Diagnosis and Clinical Management” on 19th November, 2021 by Dr. Jitendra Aurora. It was live across various platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter and was heartily attended by all including faculty, students and alumni. The talk is available for perusal for additional audience in future.

THE YEAR 2020
A Seminar and Hands-on workshop on - "Closed Reduction in Maxillofacial Trauma and Methods of Intermaxillary Fixation" was conducted by the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery on 7th February; 2020. The speaker and the course conductor was Dr. Amit Agarwal (Professor & Head Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Seema Dental College, Rishikesh). The course benefitted both the final year students and the interns. 

 

A Webinar on “Local Anesthesia – Tips and Tricks" was conducted by the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery on 15.07.2020, during the COVID lockdown period. The webinar was conducted by Dr. Sankalp Mittal (Professor & Head of Government Dental College, Jaipur).

 

YEAR 2019
A two day workshop on "Advance Implantology - Zygomatic and All on four Implants" was conducted by the department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in association with the Delhi NCR State Chapter of AOMSI, on 18th and 19th of September 2019. Course was conducted by Dr. Sankalp Mittal (Professor & Head Government Dental College, Jaipur). Live demonstration of two cases was performed, followed by hands on course on dummy jaws. Both national and international participants highly appreciated the workshop.  


A Guest Lecture on "Antibiotics in Dentistry (Uses and Misuses)" was organized to enhance the knowledge on judicial usage of Antibiotics prescribed before and after Oral & Maxillofacial Surgical and General Dentistry procedures, for the Post-Graduate students of Subharti Dental College by the department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The speaker for the occasion was Dr. (Maj. Gen.) G. K. Thapliyal (Professor& Head, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, ITS Dental College, Greater Noida).

YEAR 2017
Organized AOMSI masterclass -  A unique forum for academicians, clinicians and researchers to share their experiences with the budding postgraduates of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The four day well planned programme included didactic lectures, demonstrations and panel discussions along with the eminent national and regional faculty of repute at Subharti Dental College, a constituent institute of Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (NAAC ‘A’ Grade), Meerut.

  • XIV National Triple O Symposium 2016on “INTEGRATED APPROACH TO DIAGNOSIS & MANAGEMENT” was held in Subharti Dental College and Hospital, Meerut under the aegis of IAOMR. 400 delegates were enrolled in this symposium which was conducted from 4-6th March 2016, jointly by the Departments of Oral Medicine, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Pathology. The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery conducted two pre-conference courses:

    • Pre-conference Implant course – Nobel Biocare

  • Lecture on Advanced implantology was delivered by Dr. Ronen Bordovski, Consultant Implantologist, Italy. The partner in the lecture was Mirell Dental Implant System.  The lecture emphasized on the sinus lift techniques and new implant system to facilitate sinus lift procedure in a much simpler way.

  • Organized a CDE on “Microvascular reconstruction of the maxillofacial region” and the Key note speaker  was Dr. S.K. Saidul Islam. The CDE was a huge success with participation from number of states.
