Department’s Mission
To acquire theoretical, clinical and practical knowledge of all oral and oro-facial diseases, and the diagnostic procedures pertaining to them.
- To acquire knowledge and interpretive skills in all imaging modalities with relevance to maxillofacial diseases
- Referral and coordination with various specialities to develop a multi-disciplinary approach in challenging cases.
- Ability to effectively counsel patients in both regular and special situations like conveying a diagnosis of oral cancer.
- Basic Research skill in the handling of a scientific problem and an evidence-based approach towards solving a clinical problem.
OPD:-Subharti Dental College is known for its high OPD number with a wide variety of rare and specialized cases reporting in the Department of Oral medicine and radiology. On average, approx 250 new patients report each day in Subharti Dental College with approx 35-45 specialized cases worked up in the postgraduate section of our department.
About The Department
The oral Medicine and Radiology department at Subharti is one of the best Departments of this speciality in India having a highly experienced and committed team of Oral Medicine and Radiology specialists who are renowned in their field and have numerous publications in both international and national journals with high citation indexes.
It's one of the few Departments in India with its own well equipped CBCT centre, tobacco cessation centre, cancer diagnostic centre and a highly specialized pain clinic. CT scan, MRI, Ultrasonography facilities are available within the campus in the attached ChhatrapatiShivajiSubharti Hospital. All alternative and holistic approaches to orofacial pain and other stress-associated conditions are available within the campus.
We have a research station with an advanced imaging facility of CBCT for facilitating research going on in our department and in other departments. This facility is also utilized in consultancy from in and outside the college. Department also has patient work and research collaboration with Oral and maxillofacial pathology, Dermatology, General pathology and General radiology. Problem-based learning has especially been emphasized here. Monthly integrated seminars between Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Surgery are held to enhance strategies in diagnosis and treatment and to provide a platform for postgraduates to enhance their communication and presentation skills.
Department has its own library with a wide collection of 135 books and 120 titles apart from a well equiped central library and the internet section which has access to e-journals through the EBSCO host. Seventeen journals related to the speciality are available in the central library.
Salient Features Of The Department
The Department has ADCC (Advance Dental Care and Cure) clinic which runs the following:
- Pain clinic

Department has its own specialized pain clinic involved with the management of all kinds of Orofacial pain including neuralgias, odontogenic pain, myofascial pain, atypical facial pain and burning mouth syndrome.
TENS and ultrasonic massage facilities are available.
- Oral Cancer Detection Centre (OCDC)
(Runs every Monday, Thursday & Saturday)
“Prevention is better than cure”
We take a step forward & we help patients in early diagnosis of Oral Cancer.
We provide:
- Counselling by experts.
- Diagnostic aids available are cytology, toluidine blue, oral brush biopsy, biopsy & histopathology.
- Tobacco Cessation Centre
(Runs every Tuesday & Friday)
The Department runs an exclusive tobacco cessation centre, one of its kinds in North India in any dental institute.
We are committed to
- Counsel the patients regarding the ill effects of tobacco
- Teach methods to help patients quit tobacco.
- We perform group counselling, interactive sessions, individual counselling.
- We provide self–help material for patients interested in quitting tobacco.
- We train patients in self-examination of oral cavities.
- We also provide dietary advice.
Dental & Oral Maxillofacial Radiology Section
The following radiological and imaging techniques are performed in the department.
- Cross-sectional 3D imaging—Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)
- Intra-oral imaging – IOPAR, Bitewing radiography, Occlusal radiography.
- Extra-oral Radiography – OPG & other skull views (PA, Water’s view, Submentovertex view, Caldwell View, Jughandle view, Cephalometry).
- Digital intra-oral & extra-oral facilities available.
- Specialized radiographs for TMJ.
